Open University...Worth it?

• Hi I am a paramedic and I wanted to wish you good luck.!
I think you should do the course if it is something you are interested in doing for yourself and it will certainly not do you any harm when applying.
However.....
you could gain some really valuable experience my joining st john or red cross etc and spending time with them.
They provide very high standard traing that is practical and FREE. Not only that but it will get you used to chatting to Patients....a hard skill believe me!
Your local Ambulance Trust will look very favourably at experience with a voluntary organisation as it shows a certain get up and go.

As for your C1, obviously I dont want you to say what your Medical problem is, but you might want to check with your trust to see whether it will affect your application. Hopefully it is not anything to worry about, but you dont want to go through all the hardwork only to find that you are not going to get past the medical.

Obviously going for an OU degree is a really positive step and I dont want to put you off, just wanted to give you some other ideas.

Good Luck.....

• Well just a update, I'm up and running on the course and loving it, although a shock getting back into academic studies. Guess what i've now began my advanced driving course as well, should come in my favour when i eventually apply to the ambulance service!
• Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email !!!!!!.

Good for you! I studied with the OU, i'm having a break at the moment, and have very much enjoyed it. Don't forget about the computer /broadband grants too x
• I think that you have to give credit to anyone who can obtain a degree and work full time!

I seem to be in the minority here but I'm struggling with the OU, the tutor is distant and uninvolved, there seems to be no structure to the learning - so easy to get lost etc. etc. I didn't mind all that at first but I lost sight as soon as they emailed me halfway through the course telling me the course is getting pulled and is worthless.
I work 60 hours a week and am now grudgingly fitting my course in even though I know it's worthless purely because I can't get my money back.

Surely they've sold me something that isn't fit for purpose if they've made it so it can't count towards my degree as soon as they have my money? Is there anyway I can get my money back out of the weasels?

Best Regards

There is another OU thread on this board that is worth posting on.

Secondly when you post you should state what course you are doing and what degree you want out of it. That way people can help you.
I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
