What are my consumer rights?

I made the mistake of buying the Netgear DG834GT and WG111T from Amazon when found on special offer for around £53. Since then I've had nothing but problems with both units.

The DG834GT overheats, and drops connection constantly. This isn't a common problem, you just have to visit the Netgear forums to see how many people suffer from the same thing. It's basically not stable.

The WG111T doesn't work to a reasonable standard. It works for maybe 10-20mins then locks up, sometimes even my whoel system. I have to reboot my system and sometimes the router to get things going again. And again just looking on the Netgear forums you'll see it's quite a common problem.

I've been in contact with Netgear, but not much seems to be getting done. I've also been on the forums for the past month trying different firmware/drivers/settings/systems/scenarios/setups etc..., you name it.

Ideally I'd like to be rid of both of them but would Amazon still take them back? The order was made on the 21st September, and the goods have both been opened. In my eyes they aren't acceptable and have far too many bugs/issues.

Anyone got any advice, or know where I might stand? Thanks.

  • the DG834 series are great. i install these all the time and never had one fail!

NEtgear should replace the items for you as its in warranty. Or amazon should do something. Althought its over 30 days, there faulty.

I replace alot of belkin routers and my old one was replaced after 18months for a new model for free by belkin. Justphone up and say you want a replacement. Speak to the manager. You are in every right to have a new one.

Wireless technology, don't you just love it!! Will be good when all the manufactures are 1) singing off the same song sheet with regards to implementing standards and 2) release something which is reliable, rather than something that doesn't work just to get it to market!!

It's the same whenever there's new computer technology.

I've had problems with all the wireless manufactures, even when using the same brand at each end. Firmware updates and windows hacks have usually worked (but not always !) God help someone with no computer experience!

The DG834 and DG834G (version 1) use a different and very good/stable chipset to the DG834G (version 2) and the DG834GT. Also the fact that some places sell the newer and supposedly better DG834GT for a cheaper price than the older and slower DG834G has to raise some eyebrows. And to add to that, Netgear are willing to send users an unofficial and unreleased beta firmware as a fix says a lot in my opinion.

Wireless has generally been fine for me. The DG834GT I bought for my parents, but I own a Draytek and a KCorp, both of which have been brilliant. The Netgear though just seems very problematic and untested.
