Worst lender nominations?

Mine goes to the Abbey but people may have different ideas.

  • Nationwide are without a doubt the worst lender in my opinion. They are ok once a mortgage has completed, but their processing, slow decision making and constant problem in accepting cases then declining or moving the goal posts has put me off using them again.

Another vote for Woolwich, especially their infuriating automated phone system. "BROKER!!!"
  • The Woolwich have to be a close 2nd for me. Their international call centre is terrible. Absolutely no use whatsoever and can't answer any questions when you do manage to get through. They are no better than a glorified Answer Phone service.

Indeed. I have a complaint ongoing with them about a member of thier call centre staff who hung up on me becuase she couldnt answer the question I was asking.......I had to say it three times, she didnt know what to say so just put the phone down.......everything went wrong with them when they "outsourced".
  • Halifax for me - my solicitor is hammering them at the moment - they totally screwed the pooch in sorting out the mortgage when my wife passed away.

Denied that they'd even received the money from the insurance to pay the mortgage off in full before finally admitting that they had.

Not before charging interest for the period in question though.

Oh and they sent me a letter asking me to pay £3.00 interest remaining on the mortgage, after it had all been sorted out and the flat had been transferred into my sole name. Not to mention countless other letters despite being told repeatedly to only communicate with me via my solicitor.

Anyway, get the general impression that they couldn't find their !!!!!! in the dark with two hands and a torch. When I arranged my new mortgage, was dreading the broker telling me it was with HBOS - luckily it wasn't.

Mind you, with the amount of fannying round that Abbey (or should I say their conveyancers) are doing, I don't rate them much higher.
