Help, A&L have closed my a/c without notice

Can anyone help with a wee problem I have with Alliance and Leicester?
I recenty entered into a Trust Deed, the Scottish equivalent of an IVA. I do not owe A&L anything, nor does the account have any credit facility.
However, upon finding out about the Trust Deed, A&L have closed my account with no notice. I only found out when my card was declined in the local supermarket and when I called A&L, they explained it was their policy to close the accounts of customers in these circumstances.
If that's their policy, then I can live with that. But what has infuriated me is the lack of notice, not even a phone call to advise me what their intention was. It would have been nice to get say 14 days notice to make alternative arrangements for direct debits (some of which will now be bounced back) and salary payment, but no nothing.
Are A&L within their rights to close the account without any notice. Surely they're required to give a reasonable amount of notice to enable other arrangements to be made?
Secondly, does anyone know of anywhere that will let me open an account, given I have a Trust Deed, and would also let me have a debit card?
Thanks in advance.

They have the right to close your account that is undisputed but they also according to the banking code have to treat customers fairly.
I agree that in your case they should have given you notice to close the account.
What I would do now is wait a month or so until you know what the fallout is from the closure and anybody that charges you for not meeting your payments by D/D should be claimed back from A&L for their actions.
It won't get your account back but you should not lose out either.
You will probably have to open a basic account - most banks will offer them - most offer standing orders and direct debits and in some cases debit cards - but no cheque book or overdraft facility.0 -
I'm currently with A&L and I'm hating every moment of it...! They are robotic to say the least!0

Thanks for the advice - have spoke with Clydesdale Bank today and they are only too happy to offer me a basic account, Trust Deed or no Trust Deed.
Found out whilst trying to sort out direct debits that A&L have put tags on all of them, indicating to the recipients of the DDs that I'm the one who cancelled them!!0
