Laptop touchpad problems

I have an Acer Aspire 5003wlmi, and it's been a brilliant lappy, apart from the hard drive dying after 15 months, anyway yesterday I was taking the laptop from the desk (where it usually has a usb gadget plugged in that has my mouse, webcam, printer and external keyboard attached)

Sat down in the arm chair, and found that the touchpad and buttons wouldn't work, did a re boot, and was still the same.

If I am not sat at my desk, then I need to have my mouse plugged in to be able to move the curser anywhere.

Does anyone know what the problem could be, or is it a case of the touchpad and buttons having died?

Have checked the hardware/drivers for the on board keyboard and user interface device, and that is saying that there are no problems.

Many thanks in advance

It's possible that it's a hardware fault, but one thing you could check is the BIOS settings, as they often have an option to disable the touchpad.

Hard to see how that could have changed by itself, but it wouldn't take long to check out anyway.

You could also try uninstalling the mouse in Device Manager and having it auto-detected on reboot, though it seems unlikely that the drivers could be corrupted but the USB-connected mouse still working...
