If you're reading this notice, you will notice that this notice is not worth noticing
  • Just use some initiative and search for yourself. It would be useful for me to, I just went for a natwest one. I've previously had an HSBC account which has a decent overdraft and I've never had a problem with. A big part of choosing an account is personal, i have four different accounts with HSBC so its very convenient for me to transfer money with them. Natwest were offereing a similar overdraft and free railcard, so i thought I would try them.

"STOP PRESS! 2008/09 Accounts. The guide below is for 07/08 accounts as very few banks have published their 08/09 deals (they’re expected sometime late July/early August). As this year’s top deal is likely to beat last year's, it's best to hold fire on getting a student account for now. A fully updated guide and comparison will be published when all the deals are available."

    should be any day now!

Really I think he should at least do some of the work himself after all he is (or nearly is) an adult now. This is what I've found from deciding which bank I'd go with. I used Martin's suggestions from last year and found out what people's experiences had been from forums and talking to friends.

The advice won't have changed much from last year as the accounts on offer aren't hugely different.

Natwest is by far the most popular with the free young person's railcard which will be very useful to most students and a reasonable free overdraft limit (and free emergency overdraft extension if you phone them up and they agree). It seems they can turn into "Naziwest" after graduation and sometimes ask for the overdraft to be paid with little notice so I'd be careful to switch after graduation.

I went with Halifax as they have the largest maximum overdraft so I can max it out and put all the money in a high interest savings account. The overdraft normally starts at £500 but most people found they could get the maximum by the end of the year last year so I expect (or at least I'm quietly confident) it to be the same this year (it's £3000). They do credit checks before offering an overdraft and extensions on it so if your son's not going to be good with his money then I wouldn't go with this. Their free overdraft lasts another year after graduation at which point you can find a graduate account somewhere with a longer lasting but lower free overdraft.

The only other account recommended last year was RBS but the advantages applied mostly to Scottish students so not really worth considering if you're not Scottish. Again this year they offer better advantages to Scottish students.
