How far in advance do you book a venue?

We have been engaged for three years and finally set a date: 17th September 2010. Plenty of time to change my mind (just kidding)! :rotfl:
I guess this is largely dependent on venue, but how far in advance do you have to book? I'm knew to this wedding lark!
Come to think of it, does anyone have any ideas on a nice venue that doesn't cost a bomb? I don't want a flashy expensive wedding; would like something simple but nice.

Probably about 6-12 months in advance.
Check out your local council sites as they will be cheaper.
Whereabouts in the country are you? If you let us know we might be able to come up with some ideas.0 -
Thanks Horace!

Looking at a venue across the the East and West Midlands - Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire sort of area and adjacent counties.0 -
For small weddings - there is the Scaracen's Head in Kings Norton on the Green (this is the place that won Restoration on the TV) and its council run so will be cheaper.0

We have just booked our wedding venue for next year, in a hotel. We struggled to find availability for next summer, and this is a year in advance! I would advise you to book a venue as soon as possible if you definitely want that date. If you are more flexible then it will be ok!0

Don't hang around - I would start looking now if I were you, particularly if you want a weekend.
We got engaged July this year, and started looking straight away for a venue for next July and most places (particularly the better value ones) had very few dates left.
We have ended up with May bank hol Sunday as there were no Saturdays in July left at the venue we chose eventually.
You will always be able to get somewhere, but obviously the most popular venues get booked up first.Mummy to Thomas born April 27th 2010 8lb 5oz0 -

I would agree with booking it as soon as you know where you are going for. We booked ours in Feburary this year for May next year. At some of the other venues we looked at first they had no Saturdays left for May, fifteen months away at the time!
Hope you find somewhere you like0 -
If you want a paticular date I would think about booking up sometime in the next 6 months but the sooner the better especially if the venue is popular. I booked mine 14 months before. It all works out good in the end.If it's not good, it's not the end!0

I live in Leicester and booked my wedding yesterday for September 2009, there was only one sat free for september and the hotel did mention that they have booked quite a few weekends for summer 2010 as well, so if i was you start shopping around for venues

we got engaged last June and are being married this september. We booked our venue the week we got engaged. Luckily a couple changed their plans so we managed to pick up the last weekend in Sept, which is what we wanted, we did think we were going to have to wait another week which was the first available date in the year.0
