Windows 98 Computer

Options
I have an old Gateway Computer with Win 98 SE installed has been working ok and I have been using as a storage computer on my network.

However recently whenever I boot it up the initial screen comes up saying detected the keyboard, mouse,DVD drive and the two hard drives but then continues to another screen saying "Operating System Not Found".

I have entered set up and it says first boot device hard drive, second removable devices, third CD Rom drive and forth Network.

Can anyone please help me to get this computer running and explain what might be happening?

Sounds like your OS has corrupted, possibly due to a hardware fault with your HDD.

Can you make a boot floppy disk with your other computer and use that to boot your PC, you can run scandisk from there.

Create a Windows 98SE boot disk. If you've not got one, you can find the tools to make one from www.bootdisk.com

Once you've booted up with it, type

    sys c:

Hopefully that'll get you up and running again. I had quite a few Win98 manchines over the years where the io.sys and msdos.sys files got corrupted and doing the above replaces them and sorts it out.

I did try to reinstall Win 98 using floppy to boot to an A prompt then typed C: setup and the disc started to load then after the checks said "did I want to load windows to "D" or other" no mention of C:.

Is the c: drive spinning, cable secure?

I don't know exactly what you mean - I have unplugged and reconnected the hard drives.

    Can you feel it spinning?

I can't really feel anything but I think I can hear a noise from it.

This is what narks me off about PC users and why I have as little as possible to do with them...

This is the problem with forum's, Conor.

If you follow each bit of advise you get it's easy to loose track.

    Take a chill pill..............

    aardvark;
I'd go with Conor's advise on this one.

wouldn't do any good anyway conor, looks like its trying to boot off the d:
best guess is c: is knackered or at very least partition is so far gone as to not be seen by windows setup

I did use the boot disc I had made earlier and at the A prompt I typed "sys c"
    and got no response!
