Hoax about Windows XP service pack 3

I just got this message from a newsletter that I'm subscribed to.

I trust what he says; and it stands to reason that people should only use official Microsoft Update.

Microsoft Cautions Against Unofficial Windows XP Service Pack 3

Dear ___,

I know it has only been 24 hours since my last email but
this news is just surfacing on the Internet and could be
a timely warning for you.

It seems an "unofficial" Windows XP Service Pack has been
made available on the Internet and anyone who installs it
on their computers could be in trouble!

Here is one quote from Microsoft I have read:

"Anyone who installs this thinking they are getting SP3
(even as a preview) is being grossly mislead and is
posing a significant potentially non-recoverable risk
to their PC and data," wrote Mike Brannigan, an
enterprise strategy and senior consultant at
Microsoft.

SO BE WARNED!

...if you come across a link with a suggestion you
download the software then AVOID it.

Microsoft has said that its priority is Windows Vista,
the next major release of its operating system.

ignore it completly. XP3 isnt out at all.

ONLY update your windows install from windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Dont accept anything off of emails. Microsoft will NEVER email updates etc.

That is what it says - ie it is the warning, not the hoax itself, and gives exactly the same advice that you do.

Minor point, and probably not one for here, but has anyone looked for Windows XP on ebay this week?

I was looking to get a copy of XP for my old Laptop (from Win 2000) and theres dozens of people selling SP3.

God knows what those people who've bought them are getting!

Office XP and other Windows versions do have SP3.
