Debit Card Fraud Advice.

I have recently been contacted by my bank as there were some unusual transactions on my account. One was in france via the internet but the transaction was declined. However one transaction did go through.
When I spoke to my bank all they said was they would cancel my card and issue a replacement and when I receive my statement I should contact them again to dispute any items showing on my account.

I am a little concerned that not much is being done.

Can anyone explain whether this is the correct practice by the bank?

Is there anything else I or the bank can/should be doing?

Thanks

  • Hi,

Not sure if this is the same issue but I noticed an errant payment on my account. I called to find out about it and when I realised it was an over the counter cash transaction in another banks branch I knew it wasn't me.

My bank immediately changed my card and sent me a dispute form. I filled it in and ~10 days later had the money back.

I don't think they did anything else. Whether this is enough I don't know. They may have requested the other bank to tighten thier procedures up.

Can you view your transactions on line? Could you visit a branch? You may be able to move this faster by finding all the disputed items early.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi

    Thanks for the reply.

They were payments via the web, luckily the larger one for £231 was declined for some reason.
The guy at the bank said he was blocking my account so I couldn't view my account on the web as it would be on hold.
I don't know whether he meant blocking my card!
He would send me a replacement card and then gave me another number to contact to ask for a dispute form and that was it!
I must admit I am concerned whether they have done enough and whether this will happen again!
I feel there is more I should be doing!

My partner just went into our local branch to fill in a declaration form ( were supposedly sent one but 10 days later still hadn't turned up ) contesting two £50 Vodafone top-up transactions. Whilst in the bank was told that the same day multiple 1p tester transactions were tried and also a £20 carphone warehouse transaction in Newbury - all of these were declined!

Why on earth they allowed the two larger transactions with a company we have no connection with is utterly beyond me! Ruddy furious. We've been told at least another two weeks before we get our money back

Usual practice I think, I wouldn't worry about it, the bank's sorted it - just check online statements often and be more wary of where and when you use the card. If it's a Visa card you could opt in to the Verified by Visa thing.
