Electrician quote

Q1. Does this sound like a fair quote to you:

New fuse board complete with MCBs and 30MA RCD shock protection.
New electric shower with all plumbing etc (currently no shower, so all new).
Two new twin sockets in any place I want.
To an existing light switch: a new light switch cover (old one missing).
To two existing lights: new light fixtures (old ones crumbled into pieces).
TV aerial re-located.

All with 10 years guarantee and certificates etc. £2000.

This is a one bedroom flat, so we are not talking about great distances. Some work would be done via acces to loft.

Q2. I have a combi boiler and currently no shower. Instead of installing an electric power shower, could I just get a plumber to put in a mixer tap shower in my bath? Would it be cheaper?

I hope that someone will give their opinion because I need to get the electrics sorted out soon but not sure if this is a good quote or not.

To be honest I was a bit disappointed with the quote. The flat doesn't need re-wiring, and apart from the two bigger jobs, it seemed quite minor.

The electrician said that each dual socket costs about £115, the shower costs £700. He didn't say how much the fuse box costs but I thought it would be about £300-£500? So, (together with the new fixtures) getting it all add up to £2000 seemed a bit much. What do you think?

I have just quoted for a complete rewire in a flat for less than this.

Split RCD consumer unit (complete with bonding) £400 max
Plumbing / Electrics for shower £250 (not including shower)
2 Sockets £100 approx
Replace light switch }
Change 2 lights }all £35-£50 or less
TV point }

total £800 (this is a max estimated price as it goes by tima and may be quicker)

I would suggest you get another quote or two

Thanks Baldie!!

I thought it sounded expensive. Why do people do that? I'm sure he was very competent in the work itself, but giving a silly quote like that...c'mon! And it took him 1.5 hours walking around the flat and writing the paperwork which seemed a bit excessive just for giving a quote.

I'll try some others and see what they say.

Sounds like a lot to me. We're based in Surrey and had a quote of £1650 for Consumer unit, installing cooker, 13 lights rewired, and 9 sockets doubled up and a couple added, and some earth bonding stuff. And thats a 3 bed house.

To spend an hour and half working on that quote, he must get people that go with his prices. Good luck with future quotes.

Was going to say you might as well have to place rewired for about the same money and then you get the shower fitted anyway-i would say baldy is spot on-just putting in a new board could cause problems if there are wiring faults-and yes if you have a combi boiler you can have a thermostatic mixer shower which is what the majority of people do.
