BarclayCard Payment Con?

I got a BarclayCard a few weeks ago and went online today with the intention of making a large(ish) payment, online to discover that they only allow you to pay your minimum payment online or by phone using your debit card.

They then don't allow you to pay more than this using this method for 90 days after your first payment!!

So I had to make my £5 payment and then send a cheque for the rest which will obviously take time to clear. Will they then make more money in interest because obviously the cheque will take time to clear, etc?

Not if it reaches them before the payment due date. Have you had a statement by post? That should say latest day to pay at a bank by cheque or cash. You should also be able to see a copy of your statement online with payment details.

I can pay as much as I like online, so is this stupid rule till they trust your payment methods? Seems strange/mad, as contrary to cheques taking time to clear, switch or delta payments are checked for available funds in real time and will be refused immediately if this is not so.
I would have thought using a bank card was a more secure method than cheques, nothing strange I suppose, just more money-grabbing by banks.

Would like to see their explanation

  • Can you just set up an online payment from your bank account to Barclaycard?Details of what to enter are generally on the back of your statement.
From reading your post I think you have logged into Barclaycard's site and tried to get them to debit your bank account with a debit card.
If this is not the case post here again.

I received a statement a couple of weeks ago but at that time I only had a balance of £66 so my minimum payment was a fiver. Since then I've done some serious spending and was looking to pay a few hundred quid towards the balance.

    Yeah, it's allegedly for security purposes. Here's what they say in their help;

Why can I not pay as much as I want by debit card?

We can only accept a certain level of payment when you first use your debit card to pay your Barclaycard bill. However, 90 days after your first debit card payment has cleared you will be able to make unrestricted payments up to your current balance by debit card, either over the phone or online. Top

When will I be able to pay as much as I want using my debit card?

You will be able to make unrestricted payments by debit card over the phone or online 90 days after your first debit card payment has cleared.

Looks like you should have paid the £66 in time to prevent interest being incurred on your next statement. I still prefer to pay at a bank on the last day as it takes as long as the cheque to clear before the money leaves my account (possibly the only + to clearing times  )

Put it down to experience, but still complain in writing to senior management in Northampton about what seems to be a trap. You never know they may review the policy or give you an interest refund. Nothing ventured.

    Good luck.

Don't think this is a trap - it is to stop debit card fraud.

Debit card transactions can be returned and fraudulent payments made.

For example, what if a member of your family used your debit card to pay of their bill? The address and surname would match but it is still a fraudulent transaction.

Smile :), it makes people wonder what you have been up to.

Sorry Rafter, but it is a drop in the ocean compared to credit card fraud which they carry.

Is it only Barclaycard that perpetuates this? Seems a bit like the lame excuses for 0870/1 telephone numbers.
