Got a cheap card reader to try out yesterday(been advised on previous thread to use one to transfer photos from my digital camera onto the PC) .
When I plugged it into the USB socket it said I needed to reinstall the driver (didn't get one with it).
I have then done the following:
Gone to Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/
Device Manager tab/Other devices, comes up with ? USB Reader
Double-clicked on USB Reader, and got USB Reader Properties
In device status it reads: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28). To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.
I then get the Update Device Driver Wizard with Option 1 to:
Search for a better driver than the one your device is now using (recommended)
Clicking next I get tick boxes for,
floppy disk drives/cd-rom drive/microsoft windows update/specify a location (E:\win98 C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\ACS\net\WIN98SE
E:\ A:\ e:\common\printer\win9X\english
Or Option 2 to: display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
If I select 'other devices' I get the Update Device Driver Wizard with 'select the manufacturer and model of your hardware device. If you have a disk that contains the updated driver, click Have Disk. To install the updated driver, click Finish. When I click on Next, it comes up with the Update driver warning below.
There is also a Models: box stating:
Unsupported Device
When I click on this 'unsupported device it comes up with the following message:
Update driver warning: The driver you have chosen was not written specifically for the selected hardware and may not work correctly. Installing this driver is not recommended. Are you sure you want to use this driver? Yes No boxes.
Is anyone able to talk me through this please? Firstly, do I choose Option 1 or Option 2 to proceed? (Please be gentle, I am a complete technophobe)
Thank you

Presumably your OS is Win98SE? It looks like it from the names of the directories.
IIRC Win98SE was the first version to ship with USB drivers, but I don't think they are installed by default. If you have the Windows installation disk, insert that and get the driver update wizard to search the CD drive for the generic USB driver.0 -
Thanks for your response. Yes it is Windows 98SE. I'll try your suggestion out and let you know the outcome tomorrow (limited dial-up - aaaarrrgghhh!)0
