When to apply for credit limit increase

I need to make a large purchase (£1,800) that, with other purchases, will take me within 90% of my credit limit of £2,500 on a Halifax credit card. I will be making several similar purchases over the coming year and want to increase the limit on this card to £3,100 to give more flexibility. When is the best time to ask for the limit increase? Before I make the purchase, once it is made, or when it is paid off? I have an excellent repayment record and pay the balance off in full most months.
