virgin-atlantic flying club operation

My wife & I have just started collecting our miles for VA's flying club. Apparently, if you collect 20K miles you can upgrade from economy to prem economy. Has anyone actually done this? From reading the T&Cs it appears you have to book well in advance, and even then there is no guarantee - you only get a voucher (open for 12mths) and you have to call up no earlier than 72hrs prior to departure to find out if you have actually been upgraded.
I thought this was going to be like Air-miles where you can use your miles/cash to pay for any flight. Have I interpreted it correctly?
Any expert advice greatly appreciated!

I've done this - I had enough to upgrade from econ to upper class. This was around 18 months ago and it had to be done via them (not online). Have the rules changed then? I didn't get a voucher, the way it worked for me was I bought economy and upgraded on the phone. The ticket was confirmed at the higher class. I think I booked something like 2 or 3 months in advance, certainly nowhere near 12 months!
By the way, whoever it was who posted the virgin forum site last week sometime - many thanks! What a mine of info!0 -
You can (both) get and extra 10K miles by registering with Virgin Casino
You can also get me and (both) of you an extra £25.00 if I refer you

I have done this and successfully Won £34.00 (RISK FREE) and got 10K miles for both my wife and myself.
PM me if you want to know how.
Problem with using the miles though is that you CAN buy flights for miles BUT these tend to be more expensive than usual.
There are other ways to get miles, such as Credit cards, Wine club etc.
Check out FlyerTalk for more info on Virgin
Have fun0 -

Do what we do and ask for an upgrade, depending on what time your flight is and if it is full they will upgrade you.
We have been collecting our airmiles for yrs and have been upgraded to Silver :j you can use your airmiles for flights, trains etc. and can collect miles at virgin music stores anything to do with Virgin I think, so dont just have to fly to collect airmiles.MFWB
