can you tell me is it possible to find out who a mobile number is registered to... (apart from the obvious and ringing it!!)

You can look up which network it belongs to from the UK Phone Info website. This will tell you about call costs and which phone company it is allocated to, but you cannot do a reverse directory lookup to get the name in the UK as it is illegal here.

And I'm fairly certain neither that page, nor the one it directs to has information on who's currently running the network that phone is on, especially if people have ported their numbers. (It will give you the original company who issued the number however.)
