when best to drive with the over drive on

i have recently brought a toyota previa and dont realy understad the over drive button thingy 
is it just to be used on motorway driving once reached a certain speed
or is it best not to use it at all , what is it for is it fuel saving
any info would be great thank you :T as im a bit confussed

Overdrive used to be the fifth gear when cars came with only with a four speed box, used to be limited to higher end spec cars and used for cruising.
However, these threads suggest that it's the opposite on Toyota automatics and that it locks out fifth gear for hilly conditions or overtaking.
