I had a free trial of net meter but I don't want to pay ($19 I think) so I tried to remove the programme which directed me to; http://www.hootech.com
Hootech (yes!) want my name and e mail address and will give me net meter for free and ,not only that, there are lots of other trials that you can get... free.
Too good to be true I think! But does anyone know of Hootech, hoo they are and if this is genuine or is there no such thing as a free trial lunch?
Ta,

Thanks penrhyn. Net Meter is better than Netmeter. It gives you an average and the best bit is that you can set a limit/week... overstep it and a loud hooter goes off! However it is a trial so I'll probably go back to netmeter.
My question really was can hootech.com be trusted to give away "trial versions" for free or is there something hidden ie using mail address for advertising etc?0 -
D.K., if you're worried about that, just set up a dummy Gmail account and give that address to hootech.com. That's the nice thing about Gmail, you can set up several accounts with them, and each one can have a different purpose.0

Yup, I might give GMail a shot.
When I get some time I'll get back...not often do you see something for nothing on "Techie stuff" eh?0 -

Actually, netmeter does all that too. At least it did for me.
Just right click the systray icon, go to 'configure' and yo can set the monthy limit, it predicts how much you'll be using based on current usage, and so on.0 -
Hootech are a waste of time, you have to buy something to get something free so I've removed the programme...and got an attempted highjack warning. Nothing for free on "Techie stuff".
Thanks iviv I'll try that. I do have to keep an eye on things 'cos I'm with IDNet...someone said Virgin is better.... but we'll leave that for elsewhere!0 -
Of course, if you've got a home network, you need to figure in some traffic usage for those limits in addition to your broadband plan's limit.0

Hi MothballsWallet, Your right and there's a couple of wee scunners who are downloading too much You Tube and games and I know which computer it is!0
