Student Contents Insurance

Options
Are there any insurance comparison sites that handle contents insurance for students? Daughter has tried Endsleigh and Cover4Students and is getting quotes around £150 for £3500 contents plus cheap laptop plus ipod etc. This seems high given our home contents cover is about £250 for a lot more. She is in a shared house in Cardiff.

Anyone seen any good deals? Or is this par for the course?

Cheers

Andy

  • Steer clear of Endsleigh, they've lost the plot! If you are with them and ever make a claim be prepared as a student to be grilled with their in house claims validation unit (gustapo) they think all students claim to pay their overdraft or student loan

It may be best to go for cover4students or HSBC which have a specialist team for student cover
  • Check with your own contents insurers as many companies will include son/daughter student contents away from home, subject to limits.
Many include it as part of the policy but some will add it on as an extra if requested.

Last year when DS was just starting at uni, I contacted my insurance co, LV and they added specified and non-specified cover for him. I think it cost an extra £30. That was easy, because he was in halls, with his own room, with a lock.

When this year's renewal came in, I just wanted to check things out, because DS is moving into a house with friends. I was told that in the event of a break-in to the house, as long as his personal possessions were in his own locked room, and there was evidence of forced entry to his room, he would be covered. In his house, the bedrooms do not have individual locks, so the landlord has agreed to put a lock on his room (at my expense). I think he is doing it for all the other rooms as well.

This is nothing to do with not trusting his housemates, it is a question of being well and truly covered in case there is a burglary. Let's face it, student accomodation, not halls of residence, must be a burglar's paradise, laptops, mobile phones, ipods, etc.
