settling bill at hotel

I recently booked 2 nights at a hotel in Lancashire,. I booked on line adn the cost was £139.00. Upon check in the hotel asked for a credit or debit card and swipped our current account debit card. Upon checking though the hotel " held" £199.00 Now , we were very very annoyed at this, we could have had a need urgently for the £60.00, but my concern is " are they allowed to do this!"?

Standard practice in many hotels nowadays, it is doubtless in their Ts & Cs - which, of course you read in full before you booked !

most reserve some cash just in case you get room service, charge anything to the room etc just to make sure you can pay
when u check out you will be billed for the room and any extras if u have used them

But better hotels will give you a choice of paying cash for extras, if you use them, or holding an amount on your card and letting you pay on credit.
