Cullumpster, where did you get that article from?
I don't mean to offend you, it was an interesting read, but it contains some of the most amazing scientific nonsense I've seen in a long time, and I want to submit it to the Guardian's Bad Science column?! - most of it would seem pretty plausible to someone with no background in science, but it really is 99% mumbo jumbo!
is it? gosh, even i was tempted to try it from that write up.0 -

Crana,

how can you not like chocolate? thats not natural surely?
its yummy its scrummy, its best kept in your tummy.. still if no else liked it thered be more for meee. ;D ;D ;D0 -
I can point out some of the fallacies in it if you want... but 99% of it is just pure nonsensical rubbish.
For example, your brain does work best when you have plenty of oxygen. But how do you get this oxygen? From breathing, not eating plants! If someone put you in a box with no oxygen in it and fed you lettuce, you'd still suffocate.
I mean, water is H2O, so a pint of water contains millions of oxygen atoms just in the water molecules. But what happens if someone holds you under water - can you get oxygen for your brain from breathing in or drinking the water? Er, no, you drown!
Plus it quotes these mysterious experts (who seem to talk a load of garbage), and has very very weird studies that they seem to think should apply to people.
I mean, in humans, most people are infertile because of problems producing sperm/eggs or sperm and eggs of high enough quality, or with a blockage to the release of sperm and eggs, problems with the womb in women, etc. It's very rarely to do with them not producing enough sex hormones!
And even if they don't produce enough sex hormones, it's not very likely that this is because they are very deficient in magnesium. So saying "eat wheatgrass if you're infertile because some farmers give it their cows" is just very, very odd.
I'd also quite like to know where the bit about the 100 elements comes from. As far as I can see, we have less than 100 elements that aren't radioactive in their most common isotopes. Of these, some are so extremely rare that they are virtually never found in nature - I highly doubt our bodies depend heavily on these. And of the rest, many are harmful to us, such as arsenic and lead. Again, don't think we need these.
So where are the mystical 100?They call me Mr Pig!0 -
I should say that water is not a very good example because normally water does contain dissolved oxygen gas in it - this is how fish are able to "breathe" in water.
However say you had some water with no dissolved oxygen gas in it. There is still plenty of oxygen contained just in the molecules of the water. But you can't use it like the oxygen you breathe. They call me Mr Pig!0 -
thanks for that crana, that made very interesting reading, makes you wonder if all these things that are supposed to help actually do anything.

I think it just shows the need for proper testing of these products and for reliable information about them. I don't have time at the moment but I might have a look and see if I can find any "proper sites" (run by the government, respected charities etc) with more info on wheatgrass. I'm sure it's probably very good for you still, but it would be better if they stuck to making reasonable claims about why it's good for you instead of making up a load of rubbish.
(PS. If you go to guardian.co.uk and search for "bad science" you get some really interesting articles come up. I think they wre written by Ben someone. They're quite funny some of them!)They call me Mr Pig!0 -
thanks for that too, crana, i will have a look see what i can find.0
