    Some questions I guess ....

    - Has your AVG ever worked?
    - Have you subscribed for updates?
    - Are you running any other Anti-Virus software (or even attempted to install it)?
    - or Spam Scanning Software (even an attempted install)?
    - Are you running a firewall? (Xp, other software or hardware)?

I had the same problem last week-found this on the avg site forum which worked for me. Could not find the app file in second step but the first file deletion was sufficient:-

find and delete the WAIT4SD file, if it is located in the AVG Free folder (ensure that showing hidden files and folders is on
go to the ...Application Data\Grisoft\Avg7data folder and remove its content
    reboot your PC
    try to update again.

In programme files, look for Grisoft, left click to open. click on avg free and look for the WAIT4SD file and delete it. Exit and try to update again.
    Good luck .
