12 month backpacker travel insurance

Does anyone have any experience of getting backpacker insurance?
Will be going away for 12 months, including USA. I have been quoted an insurance premium of £296 from STAtravel which seems to pretty steep, but then im new to this and have no idea what a good price is.
Can you advise me on anything in particular that i should be looking out for on the premium. What is a good level of coverage, should i have to pay an excess or go for a more expensive policy with no excess?

Which companies are reliable to use besides STAtravel?

Hope someone can help me out a little.

Thanks
Sam

    https://www.travel-insurance-web.com do 1 year for £195.
I'd look for a high medical limit, and a bit of cash cover. Essentially as long as the insurance can dig you out of a hole if youre sick youre ok - most will add a lot of other 'benefits' in that you probably dont need.
if it's more than 10 stone, and that hairy, it's probably not a dog...it may be a wookie.

Would suggest checking out the Lonely Planet website for help with this, their forum is especially good!

I went with STA travel for my insurance, it was expensive but well worth it for peace of mind, knowing that if anything went wrong there was a shop on the high street that I could go to (they are worldwide now) or parents could go to for us!

Good luck with your travels, you'll love it. It was the best experience of my life and people never stop wanting to talk about it now i'm back!!!
