Nationwide VISA DEBIT card..

  • I haven't been terribly impressed by Nationwide so far. I had a similar problem and appealed the decision. During the account opening process the "advisor" had incorrectly entered one of my verification documents that gave me a lower score. It took some serious letter writing and appealing to get them to give me a Flexaccount.

I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't had a similar experience. Oh, and trust me - go straight to the Branch Manager - no point dealing with the flunkies on the desk, they can't fix anything (so it would seem in my case!)

    Good luck!

Not the case (I think). I got my flex account and Visa debit card without paying income into the account.
Same here. As for not being able to have more than 3 credit cards, that's not the case as I have 5 that are all in my name!

Err - entered a verification document incorrectly that gave you a lower score?? Are you talking about the ID? That shouldnt affect the score!

Secondly - as a 'flunky' (with a law degree) who works on the desk, I particularly resent the fact that we cant fix anything - going in with a stroppy attitude ranting about seeing the branch manager is not the best course of action, you are more likely to get the help you need if you talk to us like we are human and deserve to be treated as such.

  • I used to work for 02 doing the credit checking and depending on which ID you gave did effect things slightly,,its all worked out by points,,,,a driving license would be the best form of ID to use,,but saying this, there was only a slight differance between them all so i dont think this would affect them for accepting/declining,,,although there is a line.

More about credit checking,,,,when I had to consider giving someone a mobile phone account. If it was borderline points it would be referred and I would make a decision based on each item of credit they already had,,,,we didnt take into account the credit limit amount so much,,but if there had been any defaults (i.e missed payments,,etc)......we could then say yes or no.

This may not have any relevance to opening credit/debit cards though,,,just thought i'd explain a little about the process ;)
  • Well i went back into Nationwide. This time i was treated to a much slower, but much more comprehensive level of service.

Last time i had went in, some guy who was obviously too busy to deal with me jstu said he couldn't do anything and if i wanted to complain I should ring customer services.

THIS time: A very helpful lady (not the branch manager) took me aside to an interview room (after some wait) and then went through the whole problem with myself. Once she had determined what I was trying to do and my background, she then suggested a formal appeal. She suggested that late payments on cards was not the issue. Having a lot of credit available to me at such a young age (21) most likely was. So i have appealed (with considerable help from kind lady) and await their decision!

And yes... I'm going to Fiji not Fuji, and thanks very much for whoever it was that gave me info. on how easy it was to find ATMs.

As a point of reference: Nationwide's service was so good second time, I am writing a letter to express how happy I was.

Re finding ATM machines, both Visa and MasterCard have ATM finders on their websites. I've normally found airports to be a good place to find ATMs, however if in doubt you should check in advance witht ATM finders.

Apparently entering the wrong code to the identity verification document (it was entered as an overseas utility bill instead of a BT bill) lowered the overall score (I wasn't on the electoral role at that stage). Well, that's the advice provided by the front line staff.

As for the flunky comment - (I too have a law degree and a airline pilot's licence - however that's besides the point), the concern is that absolutely no one would take any ownership for the issue / questions I had. I was subjected to inaccurate information, promised return phone calls that never came, given wrong paperwork and even when I eventually decided to go to the Manager (some 4 weeks after initially applying) I still didn't get a reply to the letter I sent because "someone" in the branch had misplaced it (I presume thrown it in the bin!).

I might also add, I didn't rant, rave, raise my voice, swear or even go blue in the face. I'm probably the most reasonable person you'd wish to meet. It doesn't change the fact that my first introduction to Nationwide was the appearance of blatant incompetence. No offence, but first impressions count and Nationwide have done very little to recover their reputation with me. I certainly don't recommend them in terms of service - sure the products are attractive, but at the end of the day I want a full service and be confident that if I have a problem the staff will fix it!

Of course, this isn't to take away from the excellent service provided by other Nationwide staff - I just haven't met any yet!
  • Well as if to back up your final paragraph.. I received a phone call at work today from the nice lady at Nationwide saying that my application to overturn the rejection had been successful. She said i should have received my PIN - correct. And that my card will be along soon and that it will be a Blue Nationwide Debit card. I am extremely happy with the level of service I received second time round and will now be even more eager to follow up this with a letter of recommendation for the staff.

Incidently, if you are ever treated to a high standard of service, take the names of the members of staff involved and write to their managers. Banks and other service industries nearly always have monthly awards and encouragement of high service is only ever a good thing :) (regardless of whether we think it is our right or not)
