Hi,
I was in Sri Lanka last year and am returning in 3 weeks.
Food etc is very cheap in Sri Lanka. This is especially true if you eat food that is locally produced. Meals in the big hotels are most expensive, but local places you can get a full lunch for about $3!
To give you an idea we stayed in a fab 5* hotel for 6 nights last year. We were on half board basis (it was a good idea for us because it didn't cost much extra) so we had to pay for drinks, lunches and a few other things.
On our bill was the lunches, a bottle of wine, some souvenirs from the gift shop, soft drinks, some internet usage and a half day trip into a local town. All in all our bill was $45 for the 6 nights and that's for 2 people!!
Considering that this was in an expensive 5* hotel I thought that it was very good!!
This time we are doing a tour of the island and hope to get a better idea of the "real" Sri Lanka.
One thing is for sure - the people are very friendly and it is a beautiful country!
Hope this helps

We had 10 days in Sri Lanka in August. Food is very cheap. Extremely cheap outside of hotels but no more than £4 p/p even in the best hotels. Depending on the grade of hotel depends on how much you pay for alcohol. Our hotel charged about 8 times what the bar on the beach did.
We enjoyed our holiday, but they are still struggling after the Tsunami. With new laws of no rebuilding within 100 meters of the beaches has resulted in little re-building being allowed. Somew of the hotels we went to only had 20 people in residence.
Sri Lanka needs support, there is still very visible damage from the Tsunami. It is a cheap place to visit - do not worry about the cost of things while you are there.0
