Gas Leak and loss of service

Some advice would be greatly appreciated...

I currently rent a top floor flat in a huge victorian house (typical brighton property) and three days ago, I received a knock on the door advising that the lower ground flat were experiencing a gas leak and as a result, all of the flats in the house would have to have their gas supply turned off, not only in the flats but also from the mains outside. The gas company have since dug up most of the road outside the house and are currently drilling holes into each of the flats to provide new gas supplies to the boiler and meter as they cannot access the current failty piping throughout the property. I have a gas certificate for the property and they have confirmed that their current actions will not affect this document. The advice I am after, is if I can claim anything for the fact that I have not had any hot water for this long, I am having to travel half way round town to my friends house to have a bath which is not an ideal situation, particulary with small child!!

You might try the OFGEM website as there are things called guaranteed levels of service (or something like that) which state timescales for some activities and possibly compensation if these aren't met.

    Ask Transco?
You mean National Grid as Transco no longer exists it was split up a few yearrs ago and not longer own all the pipelines so it may be another company having the works done dependant on where the country this is .............the law is 10 days to sort it out,
I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.
  • Whe you supply is returned to you advise your supplier of the time that you have been off supply they then take the claime to Transco (dose any one remeber the post office changing its name, it will take them ages to be called anything eles) and theen the money is fowarded on to you. This is supposed to be proccessed atomaticaly by National Grid networks but your best to make sure that it is being proccesed.

Whilst business is business, public safety is more important than focussing on compensation but then these are the times we live in.....

The company that deals with gas emergencies in your area is called Southern Gas Networks a part of Scotia Gas Networks (www.scotiagasnetworks.co.uk). They can be contacted on 0845 026 0015 for advise relating to payment of compensation due to interruption of supply.

According to the website you are entitled to £30 for each 24 hour period without gas following the initial 24 hour period. Sounds complicated but basically you don't get anything if your gas supply is restored within the first 24 hours.

This is a very common occurence (I'm an emergency engineer with Scotland Gas Networks - part of the same company) and the only problem I can see with you're gas supply being restored quickly is gaining access to all the other properties in you're block of flats.

    Hope this helps.
