London Hotel near to Grosvenor Square (US Embassy)

Options
Looking for a cheap hotel within 5-10 minute walk to Grosvenor Square.

Got to visit the US Embassy for a Visa at 9:00 in the morning so what a cheap hotel for the night before. Map is here http://london.usembassy.gov/ukembmap.html

I can see that it is quite near Marble Arch and have done a quick search on https://www.hotelclub.com and although I'm looking for a cheap one I don't want a hostle or anything so just after some recommendations.

Thanks in advance

  • Please bear in mind you and around 100 other peeps will be in queue for US visas!
I had an appt for 11am and I still queued for over an hour so got in at 12 and got out at 5pm!!!

You have to queue up for about 3 different proceedures so take some food and drink with you as its a long day!!!
  • Thanks for the advice - much appreciated :-)

Just general question then..... what did you have to a get a Visa for? (if you don't mind me asking?)

I have to get one because I have been arrested. My appointment is only 3 weeks before I go and they have said it can take between 5 and 7 days to process?

Might start another thread for Visa processing time actually!!

MapChannels may be useful for this .. just substitute the appropriate date into the URL (below I've used 3/9/2008 with the postcode of the US embassy)

    http://hotels.mapchannels.com/search.aspx?d=3&m=9&y=2008&n=3&t=W1A2LQ,UK

It doesn't show the exact location - but it's near enough - you an just move the map across to locate it.

If I was you I'd find somewhere cheap and get a tube (buy an Oyster card) or a bus to the embassy. The embassy is in Mayfair which is an expensive area of town to stay in! There are plenty of cheap hotels and hostels within a 30 min journey from the embassy.

Be warned, you are not allowed to take any electrical devices into the embassy. No mobile phones. No electronic car keys.
There is a shop nearby where you can store these for a £10 charge.

What date do you want and what's your budget please?

You are looking at one of the most expensive parts of the city but there are still bargains to be had if you can be specific on the date.
It's a shame that you can't just stay at the Millennium Mayfair. They do have amazing deals occassionally.

You're probably best off looking at the smaller hoetls around Sussex Gardens. It's a bit further to walk but it's still walking distance through Hyde Park.
  • Need 1 night on Sunday 2nd November. Budgeting around £50 max for a double room? I don't mind walking a little further but don't really want to be getting taxi's or the underground or anything?

    Many thanks again

The Georgian Hotel is showing available for £57 for a double room on laterooms and that's less than a mile away.

Normandie Hotel is available for £60

    The Pacific Hotel is £57

But probably the best deal is the Norfolk Towers Hotel at Paddington for £42 and it's only 1 mile away.

www.travelodge.co.uk (click on saver rooms link) has Covent Garden for £29 for the night you want. Basic with ensuite and tea and coffee making facilities, but for that price it is very central and bargain as usually £90+. I personally would get the tube as 1 stop to Holburn and change on the central line to Bond St (so 10 mins travel time). You could walk from Covent Garden to Grosvenor Square in under a half hour.

Great advice and I totally agree!
Along Holborn - St. Giles High Street and up to Tottenham Court Road tube station - west along Oxford Street - down Duke Street... job's a good un! ;)

Just so you know, the Travelodge Covent Garden is usually £111 with breakfast so I'd say it's the bargain of the day for £29.
