Reason for declined application....

Apologies if this is an obvious question, but have had a look around the site and can't find an answer. Had an aplication for lloyds tsb credit card declined, They said they couldn't tell me why. Is that correct? Someone told me that they have to tell you the reason? (Am currently waiting for credit report on one of those 30 day free trials).

It's true that they can't tell you why - this is to cut down fraud. If you read Martin's article on this it should give you loads more info:

Actually I believe they are supposed to tell you why, I'll see if I can dig up a reference to the source for that. It may be they then say "we looked at your files with Equifax/Experian and decided you did not fit our criteria" and then you're sunk though...0

Just as you are free to choose who to bank with and apply for credit cards , banks have the right to refuse you without giving a reason.
It is always advisable to check your credit file in these circumstances and if you feel you have been unfairly treated then you can appeal.0
