Oil filled radiator vs central heating for one room

Options
I am new to the forum and I would be grateful for people's advice on my specific situation.
I have started working from home. During the day I only really need heat in my home office which is upstairs, not the rest of the house. Would it be cheaper to heat that room with an oil filled radiator or use the central heating-gas combi boiler ?
Thanks

This is a "how long is a piece of string" question

How large is the room & how large is the house?

Generally gas is cheaper than electricity, depends on size of oil rad, but you can do your own sums, if 1kw and on for ten hours at 10p a unit is £1, if 2kw then 2 quid, may vary a bit as thermostat cuts in & out with ambient temperature

Do you have thermastatic radiator valves fitted in the house?

If so, then my option would be turn these down low and use the gas

Turn all the other radiators down/off and use Gas CH.

You would expect with a combi(at say 75% efficient) that gas would be a half to a third of the cost of electricity.
  • Many thanks for the advice :)

But if I turn all the rads off except the one in my office the bathroom radiators will be going full tilt as they are not thermostatically controlled and act as heat sinks for the system. My boiler seems to keep firing regardless of the system temperature i.e. one open rad or all open rads.

This thread is over 2 years old!

If you turn off all your radiators except the one in your office, the bathroom radiator shouldn't give out any heat as it's turned off ;)

Have exactly same thought as seems strange to heat whole apartment instead of one room.

Is it really cheaper to have central heating on than 600w heater for one room?

When we had our combi fitted in the kitchen, we wish we had a small rad in there at the same time as it is an old semi-terraced which is freezing cold. having gone to 2 different plumbers to fit one, both let us down, the latter after measuring up and never hearing from again. We are left with the same problem. The sitting room is next to the kitchen and we have to keep the door closed or the cold affects the room we are in. It's unbearable to work in there and we need a solution.

As we can't get a reliable plumber who want's a job like this (both were recommended by friends) we have no option to either use our Calor Gas fire in there or a suitable cheap to run as our GCH - halogen/oil filled electric heater.

    Any suggestions ?

There must be more than 2 plumbers or RGI's in your area...though of course with the onset of the cold weather, they are all much busier now. The time to have such work done is ideally in the summer.

We had a Kick Board Fan heater put in.

Best thing ever and takes up no useable space.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

It was Spring when I was trying to get both of them in. No plumber seems to want a small job like this (Or so I was told on a plumbing forum anyway)
