I know it's an old hat, but how many of you leave the computer on overnight or maybe all day?

This practice will cost you.

Simple timer software (freeware) that will let you set the time for switching the computer off.

Good for anyone who like to fall zzzzzz in front of the pc while EON/EDF/BG etc' sending it's long arms deep in to our pockets.

Download.com is not working for me at the moment, but wouldn't it just be better to use your computers existing power management features? No need for timers.

This. Windows won't actually shut down, but can automatically go into a low power state, switching off the hard drive. You should be able to set the graphics card to do the same. It won't be using nothing, but if you had some work open, you won't loose it. Because assuming the program here simply tells the computer to 'shut down', it closes running services without letting them save information.

Thanks for teaching a grandma to suck eggs ;)

The power difference between sleep/standby/hibernation and turned off (which, if we are being pedantic, still uses a small amount of power) is negligible, so my point still stands.

Also, it is not that difficult to get your pc to switch off using task scheduler as timer and an extremely simple script.

Key point missed by overtechines :rotfl:

Yes OC you can set up tasks write scripts etc' but would that be as easy as this program? Most users woun't bother at all and the point is this can save them £££.
If you say download something large and know that it will take 4 hours to download just set the time and day and press apply, the rest is not important.

You don't know that something will take four hours just because it says it will do when you start the download. It might take one, it might take eight. If it takes one hour and your PC goes into standby 15 mins later through idleness, then that would be saving more than using a timer which you have set for five hours away from now. So it does not necessarily save money, and could end up costing you more.

I'm sorry if you don't like that - but what I have said above is factual and not just my opinion.

Agreed, a decent download manager is what is actually required, not some silly, simple timer!

I think both Free Download Manager and Flashget do indeed allow the option to shut down the pc after completing downloading tasks.
