Generally card readers don't need any additional software if they connect via USB. Every version of Windows since (IIRC) 98SE has got USB drivers built-in.
Do you know for sure that the USB port you've plugged it into recognises any other USB device?
With no memory card installed, is the card reader shown as a device in My Computer? Typically each slot will appear as a Removable Disk, though that may vary with make and model.0 -

Hi, thanks for the reply.
The reader is displayerd in My Computer as separate devices.
The card reader has a reset button on the front which i have never used.
When i insert a memory card in the appropriate slot the My Computer window just goes blank and a green light starts to flash on the front of the card reader.
Thanks again.0 -
And nothing then happens, even if you wait? You don't say which version of Windows you have, but XP onward will search the memory card to try to find out what's on it before suggesting how to open it.
That card reader seems to be quite a few years old and may use the older, slow USB standard - so it could take a while if there's lots on the card.
TBH, card readers are so cheap these days (someone on here reported buying one for £1 in Aldi yesterday) that if it doesn't work well, might as well get a new one...0 -

Hi,
I am running XP. I waited asges and nothing happened, probably 5 - 10 mins.
I know that the card has very little on it too. I've had the card reader about 2 years so would you consider this old.
Thanks again for all your help.:beer:0
