Does anyone actually make that much money selling on ebay?

Need to generate some cash quickly and have loads of clothes etc that I could sell - will I get that much for them?

many thanks

  • I used to sell loads on there but have stopped recently as stuff just wasnt selling. I guess it depends on what you've got and the demand

Bear in mind you will get charged for listing and a final fee value. Used items tend not to sell. I am trying to flog some expensive genuine trainers which I don't like but have worn once. I'm not even getting a 99p bid on them. They cost me £40! Tsk.
  • It's hit and miss totally. Some things sell and things you would expect to, don't!

There is a dedicated ebay and other auctions board where you might pick up some tips on what sells and when it is good to list, just follow the link in my sig.

However, summer is a generally poor time for ebay sales, they should start to pick up again in a few weeks (hopefully). Also remember that all sellers need to offer paypal now, so that is an added expense to factor in when considering how much you can make.

Mimi, try listing them as 'worn' or preferably 'well worn'!!! I've hung out on ebay's Q&A board long enough to have seen a fair few threads on the popularity of this kind of thing. Apparently there's good money to be made with 'well worn' shoes, if you aren't too fussy about some of the questions you might get asked!

To move onto the subject of selling clothes, I'm no expert but I have sold a few. I've struggled to sell brand new items (which simply didn't fit but I'd left it too late to return them), and eventually sold at a loss.

I've also listed a number of used children's clothes. I had some gorgeous girls summer dresses listed, hardly worn, but no interest whatsoever. I find the only thing that will sell is something with a brand name attached to it, so if it's Bratz or Disney for example, people will look, but if it isn't something like this it's much harder to sell.

As said above, very hit and miss. I've just listed 44 items that didn't get a single hit 2 months ago... For some reason I've now got bids on 17 of them totalling a bit over 40 quid with 2 days still to run. You won't make a stack (unless you've access to cheap stock of some kind), but I find I clear enough to pay for a few bits here and there. . .

I've sold quite a few different things on ebay and the other posters are correct.

A few things you may want to bear in mind.

    1. Yes it does depend on what you want to sell. Designer stuff usually does well but some people are aware of counterfeiting on ebay so you'll have to weigh up whether people will really want your stuff. Electrical stuff is also supposed to sell well BUT, consider how you are going to ship it and how much you'll have to charge to get it to people.

    2. There are new search and feedback rules on ebay and many sellers are up in arms. It appears that the new search does not 'pick up' many listed items so stuff isn't selling because buyers don't know it's there. Feedback rules mean a buyer can leave negative FB for a seller but a seller can not do the same. Lots of moaning about this one. Go to ebay forums and youtube and you'll feel and see the vitriol that's about at the moment. Also final value fees have gone up which means you get less of your profit and you MUST offer PAYPAL as a means of payment, which you have to pay for.

    3. I don't know if it has anything to do with the new search but, there is lots of Chinese and other stuff from the Far East. I'm NOT saying this is bad in itself but it does mean that your stuff might not be seen.

    4. As mentioned by other MSEr's stuff isn't selling very well. This is in my opinion, a mixture of the 'credit crunch', and changes to the ebay system.

    5. You could try EBID which is virtually the same. Is smaller but is cheaper no final value fees. I sell also on AMAZON. You can only sell what is in their catalogue but I've sold a few DVDs and books and it has been quite painless so far.

    6. What about doing a CARBOOT sale? I haven't done one for a while but when I did I shifted loads and the bonus is that people can SEE the stuff they're buying which always goes down well. Some regulars even have makeshift changing rooms so folks can try stuff on.

The choice is yours but I fear the days of making a quick killing on Ebay are gone.

    Hope this helps

designer or brand name (such as collectif, cyberdog etc) will sell better. Take the best pictures you possibly can, and make sure you put them on a light or dark, plain backrground. Atm sell summer stuff or light autumn clothes. Make sure everything is clean and pressed for the pictures and when sending out. Maximise profit by buying padded envelopes in bulk from wilkos, and mailing sacks are cheap and surprisingly good. Good luck!

(btw sort through and stick the stuff that won't sell in a bag for the charity shop)

Designer names are very problematic though due to the recent French Court case loss by ebay. many regulars have found listings disappearing all over the place and some names are now almost impossible to keep live on a listing for more than a few days.
