Flights To Cyprus

Options
My OH is posted to Cyprus in Novemeber this year and I am going May next year. Obviously I am aware of the trooper from Brize to Akrotiri but unfortunately I am all to aware of its failings and unreliable service too.

Does anyone know of any good sites to get cheap flights into Paphos or Larnaca? I've tried expedia and a couple of others and the prices arent too bad but fluctuate quite a lot.

I'll be flying out there a number of times over the months that we are apart.

Probably cheaper to book last minute deals to cyprus, and ditch the accomodation on arrival.

1wk self catering, allocation on arrival can be £160-£200 for a week.

Though, out of season, when the holiday firms dont travel there, airtravel prices are a premium.

    Just an idea.

the trooper to Akrotiri used to be v. reliable, but the seats are obviously at a premium because operational needs come first. If you live close to Brize or Lyneham (u could be on a C130 instead of a Tristar/VC10!!) then it's the obvious choice as it also saves you travel in Cyprus too. Is your oh at Akrotiri? If at Dhekelia, you need to go to Larnaca, Paphos for Episkopi/Akrotiri. You should find charters flying to Cyprus all year, though you don't say where you live, but most larger airports should be ok for this.

Have you thought about getting a flight to the north?? it might be cheaper and he can come pick you up! seeing as the movement now between north and south is very simple and no longer the pain it use to be

    might just work out cheaper

Thanks for all the above ideas. To he honest I never thought of flying to the north side, if it is possible of course.

As for the trooper, i have flown on that on many occasions for service reasons and it isnt always that reliable from what i have experienced. I am aware of the space bring premium and therefore as an indulgee you are likely to be booted off should the seat be required for Ops/Service reasons.

The OH i believe is going to Aki, although as she is currently in Afghan she doesnt know yet where hs is going for definate.

its even easier to travel between north and south now (i was there last year) all you have to do is show your passport and thats it...no visa or anything else...i just said as it might be an cheaper option because the north is really starting to open up now and therefore really wants people to come into them

and your right about the trooper....its awful now....couple of our lads two weeks ago sat at brize for 3 days before it actually left for cyprus (they just kept getting told delayed for 2 hours for 3 days) good old RAF lol

another option as i'm guessing your in the forces (not alot of people know about this) is going to RAF Lyneham and jumping on the many hercs that fly via cyprus to afghan(not very comfy but FREE) oh and 8 hours in a herc is VERY boring.....you just have to talk to the right people at lyneham (the station commander flew me and a mate out on a herclast year)

Yeah i have been looking at those. Their flight times are really early in the morning though so it would mean getting a hotel room for the night before.

Thanks, i never thought about giving Lyneham a call and seeing if there was a chance of that, even if it is a one way trip, i can probably get a cheap flight back civvy.

A few of us used www.flightwarehouse.net when we were based in Cyprus to get home instead of relying on the trooper. They specialise in flights between the UK and Cyprus...

Unfortunately, they don't allow people to indulge on the Hercs now, even if the person's in the forces. I think it's mainly to do with insurance complications and the cargo they carry. The hercs are a transporter aircraft and weren't designed to carry 'passengers' - they're noisy, dirty and have poor facilities. However, you might want to try and indulge on one of the 'white fleet.' The thing to remember is that it's not a guaranteed seat and until you take off, you can get bumped off the flight.
We looked into indulging to Cyprus later year, but it wasn;t worth losing 2/3 days waiting for flights. I personally wouldn't take the chance. We flew Glasgow to Paphos on globespan and found them really cheap.
