What to buy a medical student

I don't want to spoil the surprise but I would like to buy a stethoscope for a friend who starts medical school in September this year. I've read that some Med Schools only approve of certain types and looking online there are hundreds of different types and a wide price range. I guess the more you pay the better it should be but does anyone know what is the best buy ie and affordable stethoscope that students will be allowed to train with?
Let the wind free, where e'r you may be.

Ask the department at the uni - if they only approve of certain ones they should have a list of them?

If you don't want to risk getting them something that is not suitable for use and want another idea;

A Littman Classic II SE Stethoscope is the one that everybody gets.....
....what a lovely gift, I would have loved that if someone gave that to me in my first year!
I personally put it off (lazy me!) and bought my steth when starting clinical training at the beginning of my third year..... I went to a medical supplies shop not far from Bond Street (Welbeck St I think?) and got a deal where you get steth, lab coat, reflex hammer, light for checking eyes, and measuring tape for £60......
