I would have checked and double checked everything was in order before the holiday. The thought of losing £2500 would be the driving force. Perhaps these people have more money than I do.
thought I had checked it all but the night before we flew realised that my passport had expired a week ago and we were due to go to Sorrento next day. Hubby and daughter went anyway and i went to the passport office in London (had to make a hasty appointment) for a 4 hour passport. Online I found a flight to Paris and then went by train to Orly to pick up another flight to Naples. Got there 1 day later than them and several hundred pounds out of pocket but we had a super holiday. Will NEVER let the passports run out again though.

Rather less cruel than making the other child miss their holiday for no reason?

Your missing the point, its neither childs fault, its the parents fault for being careless and not checking the dates on the passport therefore the only fair thing to do is to cancel the holiday for everyone.....its just not fair to penalise the poor child whose passport has expired when its not their fault and it would be adding insult to injury to then on top of whats happened let one of the children go leaving the other poor child behind.

Its a hard and expensive lesson for the parents to learn but maybe in future they would remember to check the finer details when booking a holiday like whether or not all the passports are valid.
  • is it possible to travel from the ujk to france without a passport? some people tell me yes, and others no...

Leave the parent whose job it was to check the passports with the child. Go and apply in person at the passport office. It should only delay you by a couple of days. Organise flights to the destination. Pick up the holiday where you can.

Or, if you can't afford it don't waste the trip. Check what you are covered for over the insurance and see if that helps.

My partner was a pack 1 week in advance type of guy and panic at all points. I would rather be organised. Have the passports etc together. Add the tickets to them when I get them - keep it all together and check to make sure everything is OK.

If you're getting passports for your children (and if you can) try to get them at a standard age. It covers you if you have to travel unexpectedly and it means that it's quite clear that if you got them when they were born, they'll expire when they're 10 - nice and easy to keep track of.

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!

Such a sad and expensive oversight.
I don't think I could split my family up to salvage half of the holiday. I think it would spoil it for both halves and could cause resentment.
Shared special experiences like this trip can help enforce family bonds - maybe only half going could test family bonds severely.

So, an expensive and very distressing mistake but move on from it - I say all stay home and save up to do it together another year.
  • Why punish the child for the adults mistake? - an 8 year old should not be responsible for checking the date on her own passport!

I would camp outside the passport office to get in first thing for a renewal, if that didnt work I would contact your travel agent explain the situation and beg for them to help rearrange later flights or next day - obviously at your cost. You could still return from holiday on the same day and use the same accommodation just be in Disney for 1 day less that planned. I would be tempted to use an excuse that is covered under the insurance rather than admitting the truth just incase they refused to help.

Failing that I would try to sell the holiday on even for 1/2 price to recoup some money and rebook.

I personally wouldnt leave 1 child at home - 1 child devastated to be left out of the holiday of a lifetime and the other feeling guilty about having a good time and missing their playmate. I think this would be something which would psychologically damage the children and affect the family for years to come. Splitting the family like this is a decision I truly believe you would regret - I know couldn't live with myself

I'd be off like a shot if my passport was ok. I'd sent the others that lost out a postcard. What more could they ask for?!

All the posts about not making the mistake are ignoring the spirit of the question.

I personally would queue up at Petty France, get a 4 hour passport and then go to Florida with family in tow :)

Knowing me, I would probably find out what my travel insurance would cover, say sudden illness for eg. lie and say the kid/family was taken ill the day before the trip with food poisoning or something, have the passport renewed and the date amended and have the travel insurance pay the amendment fees!

How immoral am I? *LOL* Will NOT forfeit my 2500 quid, and will NOT leave her behind! How cruel is that???

if you really want to be immoral why stick at an illness....go the whole hog and kill the parent whose fault it was on the morning of depature, that way, you'd get the cover for the holiday for the death, plus holiday curtailment.

I would have suggested the child, but I know that holiday insurance values a childs life less than a parent..strange but true.

    only joking of course:D
