Financial support for travelling to uni?

Hi all i am new here - just after some advice please.

Do you know if it is possible to get financial support for travelling to and from university?

It is about 35 miles each way from home and i would need to go 4 times per week (timetable).

I cant really move into something near uni as i have responsiblities at home and it would cost a fortune to live near the university - and i dont have the money.

Any help and links are really welcomed and appreciated.

Thank you.

  • hi voy, will be interesting to know if there is as i'm in almost the same boat (30 miles wach way), i know that train fares aren't discounted on season tickets only single fares..... so if you're driving i could suggest seeing if there are any others that would like to car share with you that have a similar timetable? maybe you won't find out until you get there, but you could try liftshare.com.... if you share with one other that will halve your costs straight away...... it's what i'm banking on.....jayne

Don't think so Voy, even as fully funded NHS students we only got help with placement travel or accomodation (you go where you're sent, can be anywhere in England), but no help with daily travel. Lots of students on my course were in similar situation to you, just how it is.

Can you get a student railcard or a cheap bus pass?
    Anytime;)

I think the scottish student finance system has some financial help for travel. I don't think the English or Welsh system does though, they just expect you to pay for it out of any Maintenance grants/loans you are getting.

Voy, where are you studying? As Helix said, scottish students can claim back travel expenses, but only if you use public transport. I spent £600+ on train travel this year and got back £450ish :j
You say you have responsibilities at home, if you are a carer or have dependents your uni may offer a bursary. Even if this isn't the case, you should have a look to see what bursaries/grants/scholarships are available to you anyway. It could also be useful to check out the "Up your income" board to help boost your finances.
