Bank Charges

I have recently been struggling to keep my current account with Bank of Scotland within my agreed overdraft limit and as a result the bank have charged me £700 in bank charges since 01 July 2008! I have managed to get in top of it now but are they allowed to take this much? I understand they are entitled to charge you but in the past with other bank accounts i have had there is a maximum amount they can take each month? I phoned the bank as soon as i realised i was in trouble to ask them to temporarily increase my overdraft but they wouldn’t and i even asked them if they could stop the charges and they wouldn’t do that either.

For your info i have a Bank of Scotland Ultimate Rewards account.
