In theory yes however given that the wii is region specific with its games you would need a wii !!!!!!!!!! to make your machine non-region specific.

So basically, no. The games and console are region locked. As bear tried to say (But was wordfiltered) is that there is a CD available that you run first which lets you play foreign games on your Wii. Not sure on the legality of it, though.

I would assume that given that they are are avaliable on amazon.co.uk and play.com:

    http://www.play.com/Games/Wii/4-/5300733/-/Product.html?searchstring=wii+!!!!!!!!!!&searchsource=0

    then they should be ok.

I find this whole situ very odd, last christmas you couldnt get a wii for love nor money and yet on a day out to valencia I went to large electrical shop and there was stacks of them, by the by the german ones will work fine and funky as they are PAL and there is no need for a convertor etc.

There are stocks around though i got 2 a couple of weeks ago just walked into an hmv and bingo there they were so just keep your eyes open as I know that stocks are being brought into the uk

Although the Free-loader only allows legally purchased game discs to be played, Nintendo has released an updated firmware that would block it from running, known as IOS37. On 16th June 2008, Nintendo released Wii firmware 3.3, which blocks the Free-loader.
