Death Certificate search

i was talking to a friend and we got onto the topic of death certificates, anyway i was told you can view them online.
i went onto google to search for my brother who died in 1989. there were a few sites i found and each did have the info i was looking for, however, i could not get further than his name because each one had a fee.
i wouldnt mind paying but when i only want to search one i wasnt going to pay for that service.
does anyone know any free site to view such things, or if anyone is a member of any of these sites and would be kind enough to search my request i would be very greatful.

You wont be able to see the info for free just search for the reference number and place of registration.
The cheapest place will be either the office where he was registered or the GRO (general registration office) and it should cost about £7
