List of safest banks?

Kind of a strange question, but does anyone have a list of the safest banks in terms of financial position, or their opinion on the safety banks to hold your money?
I already have money in HSBC (crap interest), plus Northern Rock and Kaupthing, but ignoring the secure money in NR, or the fact the rest are covered by the £35k ruling, I'm interested to know which banks are safer than others in terms of their financial position?
i.e. I'm hearing that Kaupthing are a risk. I obviously don't know if this is the case, but being covered by the 35k ruling doesn't exactly reassure me when you could potentially loose that money for 6 months if problems occur.
I'm of the opinion that I'd hold all my money in HSBC if it wasn't for the fact their interest rates are so poor. Equally so, I could hold more in NR but don't trust the govenment to look after me, despite being covered by the tressury!

Already partially answered your own question - if HSBC go down, money would be the least of my worries...
Leave your keep-going-for-6-months dosh with HSBC, then spread the rest around (I have much more in 2-3 year fixes than instant-access accounts).0 -
but who are the other big companies, I wouldn't be able to guess apart from HSBC? Possible Santander?0

If size is your measure of safety then this may be of use to you
UK Banking Quite frankly if it were that easy then most investment would just leave all small banks.
