Buying good quality wine cheap

Options
I thought I would post my experiences of trying to buy decent wine cheaply over the last few years - hope it helps someone or inspires others to share their quality wine bargains.

Laithwaites - bought 2 cases for the price of 1 plus 2 free bottles (through my mint credit card). They then send money off vouchers - probably bought another couple of cases with £20 off vouchers. All the wine has been pretty good. Also got a summer case one year with Nectar points - fairly good way of using up Nectar points. It was a good way of getting to know different wines. https://www.laithwaites.co.uk - dont buy without a decent offer.

Virgin Wines - bought 1 case with a £25 off a £50 spend. Not overly impressed with the wine I have drunk so foar but considering it cost around £2 per bottle would not complain. They gave me a follow up voucher but date ran out before I ordered (quite a short date and I dont drink that much these days) https://www.virginwines.com. As with Laithwaites dont buy without a decent offer

France with a £19 day trip on the eurotunnel. Bought last years Christmas Champagne (a Rose from a French Warehouse). Great fun and there are savings - personally I prefer going to the French shops as I like to try something that I cannot get over here. Calais Vin was one place I went to apart from the usual Eastenders (where I got some good cheap barolo), Majestic (Wine and Beer World) and Tescos.

Tesco Clubcard offers - still kicking myself for missing the 2500 on a £100 spend last month.

Makro - they have cases Hardy's Varietal Range on 3 for 2 which has good ratings on Superplonk (for the 2001), Barolo for less than £10, a couple of nice looking Chiantis as well as masses of others that look pretty good,

Superplonk is worth checking before buying from an individual shop - though for full search facilities you have to pay (which irritates me but never mind). there are great articles on there though - including the current one with Superplonks of the Year. https://www.superplonk.com

1/2 price offers from Sainsburys or Tescos - Old Vines Grenache for £2.99 during the last 2 years has been a good buy.

Another good information site is https://www.wineanorak.com. - there is a good article on buying wine on a budget http://www.wineanorak.com/budget.htm - I am quite into Portugese wine at the moment though mainly stuff I have brought back from holiday

  • Just found this site via Wine Anorak which lists all the current wine offers on high street (wine version of trolly dolly or fixture ferret):

Yeah, I get that stuff too.

It's really great value at £2.99 - always end up drinking it whilst cooking the evening meal.

Plus, it's reassuring to see it on the shelf at the full price of £5.99 inbetween the offer periods! So many other wines I buy on 'offer' and then I never see them again - bit of a scam methinks!

There's a forum member who used to maintain a site listing current cheap cases:

    http://www.acaseofwine.co.uk

Site I believe uses referral links, but these are only to offset some of the hosting costs. Also has details of current discount vochers.

  • I think I bought of these in my mixed case from Virgin too - it had a different label but seemed (and tasted) the same.

Might be worth if for anyone taking up an offer from Virgin Wines (such as the current one listed on forum - see other post http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=108815&highlight=virgin )
  • The much maligned (on MSE) TESCO do a CN du Pape for £7.99, Don't know where in UK to get that cheaper. Bought 1 with a £1 off wine voucher from Wine club. Not tasted it yet mind....
  • Based on all the info where, would you guys recommend I buy a very cheap small case to break up and give as part Xmas presents? (online purchase) :)

    Hi

Mel from QuaffersOffers.co.uk here. The problem with cheap wines, as found above, is that if you pay very little for wine, especially if it's online and you haven't tasted it before, it can be vile rubbish.

I've done some of the ground work for you guys, and tasted thousands of supermarket wines.

If you visit the site (free) and search for wines from your local supermarkets, of your favourite variety, colour, country and price, some of them will have notebook icons, which lead you to tasting notes. If the wines disgusting, I'll say so, and there's usually a grimacing emoticon to lead you to the really bad ones. There's a star to lead to the good ones, and a large £ sign for the good value wines.

I've had trouble with getting the info from Asda, which is a pity as they have some good wines.

A real bargain at the moment is their Montepulciano d'Abruzzo at £2.98. Easily worth a fiver.

"Cracking smell for £2.98. Spicy and interesting. Fresh acidity and spicy, interesting taste. Really a brilliant buy."

    Hi Mel ,

Just had a quick look at the website ... and have added it to my favourites :D .....
The supermarkets "offers search " is great .... :T Think i'll be going shopping tomorrow !! ...

    Thanks very much :D:D ...
