Post Office Bank Account

If I open up a post office account to have my benefits paid into before I go bankrupt will it be closed or frozen by the OR when I go bankrupt. The type of account that I am talking about is for benifit payments only.

No, it shouldn't be frozen. Is that the only type of account you'll need though?

It's not down to the OR but down to the PO,I certainly would not rely on it being open after BR and would ring the COOP and tell them you want a Cashminder acc prior to BR and then keep this as s BACKUP ACCOUNT.

  • PO accounts are NEVER frozen if they are just the one for benefits.

Thanks for the reply BLTN. I am going to open a Post Office Account to have my benefits paid as we will need money to live on, my nationwide will be frozen when I go bankrupt. On the day of bankruptcy I will hopefully open a cashminder account with the co-op as they have a branch in the town (30 miles from where we live)where we are filling for bankruptcy, they don't have a branch here.

Jaks you can also open an account over the phone. When you need to deposit any money you can do so at your local post office and their phone and internet banking is excellent.

    Thanks tigerfeet2006

I am hoping to open a cashminder account as I cannot function without internet banking lol.

When is the best time to appy for a cashminder account, can I do it now or do I need to wait until I am declared bankrupt? The account is really important to me as I need somewhere to get my benefits and housing benefits paid in, I also need to pay my rent by standing order (rent due on 23rd of every month).

I picked my bankruptcy date around my benefit payments, we get child benefit on a tuesday and income support on a wednesday and also our housing benefit is paid into our account on 2nd September which is before bankruptcy, so if necessary I can withdraw the rent and pay it straight into the landlords account. I will need my new account up and running at least 2 weeks after bankruptcy (4th September), next housing benefit is due to be paid on 30th september (could always request a cheque and hope the account is set up by 15th october in time to allow the cheque to clear to pay the rent by 23rd October.

We were told by our OR that best time to open the account is the day of going bankrupt. Anytime before that and it might be frozen by the receivers even if the bank is happy to let you carry on. 24 hour UK Call Centre 08457 212 212 - the Co-Op have been fab with us!

I with Merry on this one people keep saying about getting a Co-op cashminder account before BR but this may become a pain and is risky. Although you might not have much in there it may still be frozen and you may have hassle depending on your OR to get this changed. Why give yourself the stress?

I asked my OR about this in my interview and i was yet to open an account and he said to me that after was less hassle for everyone and if it was after it was nothing to do with the OR that you have a new account (Unless they think there may be fraud)

My advice always is do it as the first thing you do when you leave the court........

    Thanks for the replies.

I have made the decision to open a post office account to have my benefits paid into, and then on the day of bankruptcy go to co-op on the way back from the court and apply for a cashminder account.

My question about opening a cashminder account is what identification do we need to take with us on the day?

We don't have a passport or driving licence.
