Sound problem on Advent 9617

My friend has a problem with their Advent 9616 laptop. They say the sound crackles when they listen to music but when I looked at it for them it wasn't that bad. I updated their Realtek driver for them though and all thats left now is a high pitch crack every now and again, for instance when shutting down. I know I've not decribed it very well, but would anyone have any idea what the problem could be? They're running Vista
