updating bathroom, replacing suite, tiling etc

just started on updating my bathroom. already removed most tiles, except around the bath and shower. i know i need a new white suite, and new tiles. it was fully tiled before but i'm thinking of just tiling splashbacks and painting the rest (after having it skimmed). plastered said he'll do the whole bathroom for £90 including ceiling, its only small. here are some pics:
basically want it to look clean and fresh as cheap as poss. thinking of takeaway suite from a diy shop which seem to be £150-200. tiles probably neutral colour, dont want white really. walls paint a light colour. may replace rad with a towel one. already got a decent fan fitted. not sure what to do with the pipes behind the toilet and sink ??? and plastered said i could chisel the shower tubes into the wall as you can see in the pic they just hang across the wall.
what i need is some advice on doing this myself, everything will stay in the same place so plumbing shouldnt be too difficult??? but will i need any special tools for removing the old things and fitting the new? could i do the tiling now and just leave the bottom , as these need to overlap the new bath? would really appreciate some tips and advice on how to do this, want it done quickly as i hate not having use of a bathroom!!

i don't know anything about bathrooms but from experience i would make sure it is tiled the whole of that wall along the bath next to the shower especially if you use the shower alot,
we lived in a flat where it was tiled only halfway up the wall when it got to halfway acrossthe bath and when we used the shower and little splashes of water hit the untiled wall eventually the paint all started peeling off and it looked a right mess. but maybe not a problem if you dont use the shower too much we used to use it everyday.0 -
Our bathroom in our new house looks much the same, except the suite is a poo brown shade.0

LOL Lally, will you be updating it soon then like me??? My kitchen was a nightmare, it has taken so long and I still have a few little things to finish. I want the bathroom to be the opposite, a quick job and no days without a bath or shower!!
Beauty I know what you mean - I have noticed how far the shower sprays and I will tile full height all sides of the bath!!0 -
so no tips for diy bathroom fitting then???
i'm gonna get a white suite but have no idea whether it will fit on easily where the old one did!
also what do you reckon about tiling around the bath white, the same as the suite. do you think it can look too white? or if i paint the rest of the room a colour would that warm it up ?0 -

Hi, we looked in to a diy bathroom and have decided against it. I found a how to thing by googling and it looked too complicated for my liking.
I think if you are only part tiling, the white is fine. you can go for a different colour for the walls and also in the accessories (towels etc) to brighten it up.
We're tiling our entire bathroom, and I did consider white for a while but, I thought an entire white bathroom would look very clinical.0 -
buy a 20% off homebase voucher on ebay and buy it there0

Hi,
I'm no DIY expert but we were in an extremely similar position. We had a bathroom with shower cubicle, toilet and sink, and wanted a new suite with a bath. But didn't want a costly price tag!! We took off all tiles, took out all fittings. Bought a white curved bath suite from B&Q for approx £400, and bought light beige wall tiles from Homebase which were £11 a box. Beige tiles look great with white suite, used white sealant and grouting. Tiled 3 walls completely and painted the third wall a pale beige colour so that cabinet, mirror, loo roll holder and tower rail could fit easily. Fitted dark oak colour bathroom laminate flooring to match dark wood windows, and have used chrome/dark wood accessories.
It did take a while and we had to remove/install parts in various stages. i.e did not change toilet until end, plumbed bath first so that we could have bath but no shower, and no splashing on untiled walls! It was hard to put up with, but necessary.
RE the pipes, our soil pipe, and sink pipes were exposed too. We "boxed" these in with wood, and then tiled over the wood to create extra "shelf" space.
If I knew how to put photos on here then I would show you before and after photos.
Good luck0 -

To upload the photos, I just take them on my phone, transfer to computer via phone software. Then upload them to tinypic, just a couple of clicks. Once uploaded they give you the text to copy and paste to make them appear within your post!
By the way thanks for your tips, I now have a week off and today going to have a look at suites and tiles!0
