Re: Citybeds.co.uk - What a rip-off!!!

I bought two budget beds from citybeds.co.uk a few months ago back in April 2008 - a single and a double. Before I actually paid for the items I asked Paul who runs citybeds if the small double bed was sturdy enough and would accommodate two people; I told him it was for my tenants.
He assured me that despite the bed being at a budget price it would accommodate two people. He said it was not the best bed in the world but it would last.
At the end of the July, three months later the bed broke! I looked inside the bed to see where the break was. The frame on one side was made from rotting wood so did not stand a chance ever of lasting more than a few weeks so I got lucky with it lasting 3 months!! Anyway, I called up Paul at citybeds and explained that the bed frame had been constructed from rotten wood on one side and should not have been sold to me.
He told me what did I expect from a bed costing £89. He said that he should not really be selling these beds but people wanted cheap beds for their rental properties so he did. I told him that if he knew he should be selling them then he should not be selling them. I also explained to him that if the frame had NOT been constructed from rotten wood in the first place then it would have lasted no problem but he wasn't having any of it.
His attitude was aggressive and non-negotiable. I asked if he would replace the bed or at least repair it seeing as unacceptable wood have been used in the first place. He told me to get a carpenter to fix it. I told him I didn't pay £89 to get a bed that broke straight away but he refused to come to a compromise and duly told me that the bed I had bought did not come with a warranty and that those kind of beds break if two people sit on them. What!! When I reminded him he had told me the opposite when he was selling it to me he offered to sell me another bed!! What a cheek. He point blank refused to help.
Had he told me about the "no warranty" when I bought it I would not have purchased it. I assumed, as with all products bought, that it comes with some sort of warranty. But no!!
What a waste of money!!!! Buying an inexpensive bed does not mean I should have been sold heap of sawdust! I have purchased a bed that cost roughly the same amount from another place and the bed is still going strong 3 years later. This one should have seen out at least one year! It seems that I would have been better in this instance purchasing a second hand bed!
Anyway, I just wanted to inform all landlords out there and indeed anyone who wants to buy a bed DO NOT get it from citybeds as they are complete rip-off merchants and will tell you exactly what you want to hear just to make sale. It's disgusting!! They should not be allowed to sell beds that they know and acknowledge are not worthy of use!!

I think your will have to take him to court to recover the money if it was a rotten bed.0

I usually find buying the metal framed bedsteads and a cheap mattress will last longer and look better than going for a divan. I actually knew a guy that sold divan bases he made from cardboard!!!!!!0

Inform trading standards and/or you can go through the Small Claims Court for around £35 - you can usually do it online.

At £89 for a double it sounds like it was a second or bankrupt stock. This would explain why he said that there wasn't a guarantee.
Did he tell you that they were seconds or bankrupt stock? Unless he stated this, or he said that the beds were only designed to last three months, then you have a very strong case, as they are not fit for purpose.0 -

Are you sure it was cardboard, or did he mean that the top of the platform top bases were made from hardboard?0
