Free Word Processing / Spreadsheets

I'm looking for a free simple word processing and spreadsheet software.

I'm aware that Open Office does an excellent package, however I don't require the other software ie. Powerpoint / Access alternatives, and would prefer something smaller.

Is Open Office still the best choice or are there any other alternatives out there?

Thanks.

Yes if you want to be reasonably compatible with Microsoft docs etc. You do not have to use the other progs of course.

When you install either MS Office or Open Office, select to do an advanced install, and you'll be able to select which programs are actually installed.

    Thanks for the replies.

iviv - I wasn't aware you could select which programs were installed so I'll give Open Office a try - cheers.

Yeah, as long as you select an advanced install, you should get the choice. You'll probably get asked a couple of other things you wouldn't normally see while installing like this, but the defaults should be fine.

Have you got Microsoft Works on your pc? This will have the basics all ready and waiting.

But they're dire and not compatible with the normal MS Office file formats that almost everyone uses.

Actually bigbloke I havn't got Works on my PC - I've used it before and thought it was ok, so was thinking of something similar - but I've gone for Open Office and as Superscaper says it will be compatible with imported documents so happy with that.
    Cheers guys.
