can the bank do this?

Hello,

I am having a little problem with my halifax bank account. last month i went on holiday for two weeks and when i returned i found 9 letters from halifax. When i opened them all i found they were all to make me aware i am being charged for a fail direct debit from paypal. Each failed ammount was under 10p and i was being charged £35 for each one. when i checked my account online i noticed that the bank charges had already come out so i was £235 overdrawn.

i Phoned the bank a couple of days later after recieveing more bank charges letter asking them what is going on. The lady over the phone tried to get my bank account up but it was saying the account was closed. After being passed from department to department i have now found out that as my account was overdrawn for 3 weeks without me contacting them that the account was closed?!

can halifax close my account just like that? they didnt even contact me AT ALL to say that the account was being closed. When i asked what i should do next she says i should pay off the debt and reapply for a account. this isnt going to work for me as i have bad credit history so they would never let me open another account.

so yes basically all i am wanting to know is if halifax can do this without warning?

sorry for the lenght

Jon

If you were only on holiday for 2 weeks how come you say the account was closed for being overdrawn for 3 weeks?

Also how did a payment for 10p fail? Did you have no funds in the account at all?

As for whether they can close your account, I suspect that answer will be in the terms and conditions, and I suspect it will be yes.

The account was overdrawn for 3 weeks because i waited a week before i phoned them.

the reason a 10p direct debit failed 9 times is because i keep all my money in a halifax websaver and transfer it over to my normal account when i need it.

I appreciate it doesn't perhaps help you this time round, but it's never really good practice to do what you describe and completely clear ALL of the money out of your current account.

You always have to leave yourself a margin for error for unanticipated payments like this or ones you may simply have forgotten amount.
Plus you're having to continually transfer money in and out.

A better practice would be to just transfer a fraction of your funds to a saver account every month, leaving all you need to live on and pay the bills that month in the current account. Then you can have another look the afternoon before your payday and sweep anything that's left into the saver as well.

if its had several charges or carcash/easycash no notice has to be given and sounds like they have wrote this money off

money has to be in the account day before direct debits are to be taken
