As far as I know, the law is like this:-

    a. If a cat is in your way, and if avoiding it would cause an accident you should hit it.

    b. A dog must be avoided at all costs, even if attempting to hit it will cause an accident.

The driver of the vehicle would have no one to claim against, the dog is running free at the time of the accident and it's not foreseeable that your actions would cause an accident, the driver should of been paying attention.

Don't worry about the car :)

Hope the dog gets better :)

    Not so:
The same rule applies for pets as it does for livestock: if it can be proven that an owner has been unable to control their pet from venturing onto a highway and it causes a serious car accident, they would be liable for the crash meaning that anyone who had suffered as a result of the stray animal would be justified in contact a no win, no fee solicitors with a view to making an accident claim.

Cats are excluded, I believe. Something to do with being roaming animals.

    Not quite so clear cut.

It is an offence under section 27 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 to cause or permit a dog to run loose on a road. This is the case because it can be reasonably forseen that such an action could cause an accident.

Accordingly, a car driver could have reasonable grounds for mounting a civil action for damages because the OP has done something that is thought so potentially dangerous it is subject to legislation.
