Bestpud, I would get everything on that list. Lol.

    Other tips for her course.

While they are cheap stock up on files and arch lever type things, shell need plenty!!

Get a memory stick (2gb minimum) AND a portable hardrive (about 100gb). Make sure she backs up on the portable hard drive every week!!!!

It will be a !!!!! stick. To be honest get that and spray mount, which is a godsend!

    Thanks for the replies.

She is doing digital media but the college she is going to makes them all do every type of art in the first year (well, not every type but they get a taster of everything they do there, except for performing arts).

They say many students have limited experience of the different things they can do and it gives them a chance to see what they really like doing, and what they are good at, before they specialise. I think it's a good idea tbh.

    Ok, here's the list:

    Pencils (HB, 2B, 4B)
    Coloured pencils
    Pencil sharpener
    Large rubber
    Variety of paint brushes
Glue sick x 2 (is that for a glue gun, or pritt stick type glue?)
    Scissors
    Metal ruler
    Masking tape
    Stapler
    Small set acrylic paints
    Retractable craft knife
    Memory stick
Small, portable tool box to hold all the above
    A4 sketchbook
    Workshop overalls

As you can see, it is fairly basic and some of it is general student stuff anyway imo. Plus, much of it can be bought in cheaper places than art shops as I said before.

This came with all the bumpf about the first day so I can only assume they expect them to have it from the start - there will definitely be no more info now until she starts.

As a non art student, I'm thinking that is a pretty basic art kit, but I may be wrong? Why don't they write these things in numpty language? :D

I'm doing digital media too (production/art) but I've not received any info of what I'll need as yet... can't wait!
got all excited yesterday when a large envelope arrived.. but it only consisted of a basic letter and a leaflet on the area!

I think I've got most of this stuff... ebay can be good for some basic pencils/paints etc.
I live in London and there are discounted art shops here which is good.
The uni will have a shop that sells discounted art supplies too - might be worth checking when they open again (I'm assuming they close for the breaks)

I would recommened the glue stick (not a glue gun) and spraymount... spraymount is fab... there are two types.. I think it's the blue can that can be used to reposition stuff even once it's been stuck down and the red can is more permanent (it's been awhile since I last used it but I'll be buying some more soon)

metal ruler is very usefull and get a scapel (craft knife are also good as sometimes you can get a kit that has different types of blades in with it) obviously if you use a plastic ruler you end up with gouges taken out of it! not so good
(I did once take the ends of my finger pads off when I wasn't paying attention but no permanent damage lol :p )
workshop overalls... I would have thought an apron would be enough but I've not done this course so I don't really know about that.

I got my 4gb memory stick online for £14.70 from Amazon
and they are doing a good deal on external Hard drives too - there is a post on this site about it - for 350gb or 500gb cost approx £50.

has she had a book list yet?
(wish they would hurry up and tell me more!)

Wiggynut - it is a college course as she is only 16. I'm guessing they sell certain items there but they don't have a shop in the way unis do.

Don't think there will be a book list either.

Btw, I am at uni (not doing art though) and would strongly advise you to hold off buying too many books from your reading list - you are very unlikely to need them. And for the books you do need, there are sure to be second year students selling them.

    Good luck with your course.

ahh... sorry, made an assumption that you were talking about Uni courses - I did think some colleges do have a small shop too... maybe it depends on the college.

I was hoping to buy the main books only.. .then borrow the others - or at least buy one book to read now rather than waiting for the course to start. (oh... I sound so eager! lol)

I'll just have to try to be patient... I would like to get my new iMac now but I'm having to wait ...... student offer might be good!

good luck with your course too!
