Sky Recommend a friend con

Need to get this off my chest and see if anyone else has experienced this problem.
Recently got a leaflet through from Sky offering a deal of a free upgrade to Sky 160 from Sky+ if you recommnd a friend.
Convinced my parents to take the plung. They phoned, arranged installation got all the details I needed to register for the upgrade.
I needed to phone 08702 412939 and quote "onesixty", my parents 12 digit customer number and my own.
Phoning the number above is obviously a Sky number where you press key 1 to register. Then I believe they transfer you to another company to deal with the claim.
Always get through to the initial number, but on hitting 1, 99% of the time, after being told 'trying to connect you' within 1 minute, it says all our operators are busy, please try later and cuts you off!
I must have called this number 60+ times at national rate over two days!
I got through on two occassions after being stuck in a queue for 5 minutes or so. First time, I didn't have all the correct details about my account to hand, and they are unable to look it up. Had to phone back.
Second time, the line dropped and got cut off.
Finally, 3rd time after 2 days of trying, I think I got my details registered this morning.
What really p%$$es me off is the fact its an 08702 nation rate number, its a lottery to get through and has cost a small fortune in phone calls.
Funny how when my dad phoned to become a subscriber, no problems getting though at all (on a different number).
I cannot believe they are that busy taking referal calls otherwise the entire population would be on Sky within a couple of days!
I am going to write to complain to Sky about ths (not phoning!) and I'll let you know how I get on.
Be aware, if you try to take up such a deal, you will need to know your 12 digit customer number, your friends 12 digit customer number, your postcode and address plus your friends postcode and address.
If you do get through and don't have all the details they require, make them hold on the line while you get them. Do not offer to call back otherwise, you could spend loads of money and time trying to get back through.
There should be some ruling that if a company make such an offer, it should be just as easy to take up the referal 'gift' as it is to sign up the referal. i.e. You should be able to register both referer and referal on the same telephone number as this just stinks!

you could try phoning sky customer services on 01506 522720 and ask to be transferred to the right department. At least if you are waiting its not at apremium.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. Calling Sky (for anything but signing up) is an absolute joke!
I've been on various discount offers for 6 months but now want to cancel.
I phone up and waited 25 minutes for an answer. I then had to be transferred to the right section. I waited 15 minutes for this and then gave up.
Tried again later... spent 10 minutes navigating the menus only to be told "all operators are busy - call back later".
It seems calling several times and being kept on hold for 20+ minutes is very common.
Surely this can't be right. They must be raking in £1000's every day just by keeping people on 0870 numbers on hold.
Does anyone know if there is a regulating body it might be worth complaining to?0 -
I persuaded my friend to join sky so we can both get a free sky + box. It is now 27th Feb and I havnt received any paperwork etc. I have been phoning every week for updates and being told I shall be called within a month.
Please any suggestions I've tried complaining but I think I need to complain in writing.0 -
Did u ever get ur free Sky + box? If so, did u have any problems with it? We already had Sky and introduced my brother who got his free Sky + box straight away. We got a letter today saying we would have to pay £60 installation for our FREE sky + box, it's a complete joke.0

They tend to suddenly be able to do things for free if you let them know that you'll be leaving them because of their £60 charges for something advertised as free. They told us it was £50 to have a dish installed at a new address and 2 seconds later after being told "well, we're out of contract so we'll just forget Sky" it was £0.After posting about receiving an email to my MSE username/email from 'Money Expert' (note the use of ' '), I am now unable to post on MSE. Such is life.0

Had sky logo leaflet through letterbox, talked with friend(as I had sworn never to go back to them) £50 intro a friend clinched it oct 2008. Never given it as I apparently rang the wrong number and went through a retailer!!!! the number was on a sky logo leaflet, they then directed me to an 0208 no for installation. Complete con0
